5 STEPS
When camping in the great outdoors, it's important to keep yourself safe by protecting your food from animals. Here are a few tricks to stay safe on your next camping trip.
Step
Overnight, empty your backpack with all compartments unzipped
This way if animals are attracted to your backpack, they won’t gnaw or shred the material in search for food.
Step
Pots and eating utensils should be washed and rinsed far from your campsite
When possible cook food away from where you’ll sleep to avoid leaving leftovers. Food and anything aromatic, like toothpaste, lotions and bug spray, should be stored 100 to 200 feet away from where you’ll sleep. Store clothing you’ve cooked in with your food.
Step
If you have extra food, use a spare pack and rope and toss it over a high tree branch
